the perfect solution to your wiring problems

Skillfully Replacing Knob And Tube Wiring In Your Home

After completing the final paint touch-ups on your home, you are ready to put it on the market. However, one last run-through with your real estate agent turns up an unanticipated problem: your home has a knob and tube wiring. This first generation electrical wiring method is not only obsolete in today’s day and age, but could be a potential safety hazard should something go wrong. Anytime a home is sold, any K&T wiring has to be removed per the buyers’ contract and most electricians won’t touch the stuff because they don’t have the skillset to remediate the problem correctly. Fortunately, Chesapeake Electric is up for the challenge! Our experienced team is led by a Master Electrician whose thoroughness and knowledge of knob and tube remediation provides the perfect solution to your wiring problems.

What is knob and tube wiring?

Knob and tube wiring was an early standardized electrical method in North American buildings from 1880 to the 1940s. It is very common in the historical districts of Annapolis, Baltimore, Ellicott City, and Washington, D.C. K&T wiring consists of insulated copper conductors that pass through drilled holes in lumber framing that are protected by porcelain insulating tubes. These tubes are supported along their length by nailed-down porcelain knobs.

Common Problems With Knob & Tube Wiring

While the original installation of knob and tube wiring is at times superior to modern Romex wiring and the porcelain components have an almost unlimited lifespan, there are several disadvantages to this dated wiring method:

  • Though not inherently dangerous, knob and tube wiring is not permitted in any new construction due to the fact that it can be a fire hazard in buildings where insulation envelops the wiring. Insulation cannot be blown or laid on this wiring.
  • K&T is also an ungrounded electrical system, which means it cannot be used with 3-prong appliances. Without a grounding wire, there is a higher risk of electrical fires and damage to sensitive equipment.
  • In addition, most homeownersโ€™ insurance policies do not cover electrical hazards in homes where knob and tube wiring is found, increasing your out of pocket expenses should your home ever have an electrical problem.

Brian and the team at chesapeake electric went above and beyond from start to finish. I lost power in certain parts of my living room and kitchen, including the ceiling light and fan and of course the outlet that controls my router / modem for internet ๐Ÿ™ƒ as soon as I called chesapeake electric I was greeted with friendly customer service who understood my urgency and sent me one of the best as soon as Brian was selected for the call he contacted me immediately with an ETA and to touch base. my man listened to a quick story of what caused the issue and he quickly calmed me down upon his arrival he was super polite, respectful, knowledgeable, and most importantly helpful. he quickly identified the issue and got to work while explaining what caused the problem on the inside I couldnโ€™t have asked for a better experience. Thank you again Brian!

Chesapeake Electric sent a superb Master Electrician and technicians on a full rewiring of our old home. A few weeks later we had others come out to do additional work. Jimmy, Terry, and Kevin, all Master Electricians, and Shannon and Trevor the technicians, were friendly and hard-working, often from morning until late afternoon. We can say many wonderful things about each of them, but this would take too long to write! Please know Chesapeake Electric hires excellent people to work for them; knowledgeable, focused, respectful, and polite. We highly recommend them for small and very large jobs. We don't think you'll be disappointed. Thanks Chesapeake Electric!

A few weeks ago (it may be longer) the circuit breaker in our panel box tripped for the well pump. Me, being the master of everything technical, pumped my chest out after I reset said breaker and the water started flowing once again! (I handled that disaster!) Well (no pun intended) after a few more weeks of having to rest the same breaker in order to have water access we called a well company. Long story short, we needed a new well for $20,000. So now my mastery of the "everything technical" was demolished. The motor was bad and there was "water intrusion" in our system. Another week passed of more "flipping the switch" until last night. The breaker refused to reset. UH OH... So I went online and booked an appointment with Chesapeake Electric. (Very easy process by the way even though I am very technical!!!) They called me this morning to confirm said appointment. And this afternoon a very nice yet professional and very knowledgable gentleman arrived out my house. Christian has entered the chat! I explained the situation and he assured me he would look at all possibilities. Well. Christian is an electrical magician! Not only did he go under the house and find A BURNED ELECTRICAL WIRE that the well company didn't see (Or did and didn't want to mention it) but he repaired the line for a fraction of a new well and now we have water and the breaker HAS NOT broken!! Now, Christian went over all of the options I could have chosen Very thoroughly and patiently (you know, because of my strong technical skills and all!) I chose the path of least resistance JUST IN CASE it did not fix the issue completely. Well, it did. Christian and Chesapeake Electric saved us over $20,000.00 And we will be using Chesapeake Electric for all things electrical in the future! SOOOO.. All of that being said: Thank you to Jackie, Katie and Kevin. And thank you again to Christian!!! You all are fantastic. Thank you, Chesapeake Electric. It was an absolute pleasure to work with you all from start to..... We arent finished working with you so its just.. so long for now! Sincerely- Ben, Julie and Family

Major electrical issues after a storm. But the team from Chesapeake was incredible from start to finish. They kept me informed and highlighted small problems to resolve before they could become larger issues. They also worked very well with the other repair teams that were onsite, as the damage involved appliances and HVAC as well. Iโ€™d definitely use them again.
